The Diablo Podcast #51: TL2′s Travis Baldree Interview + Commentary

Posted 20 November 2011 by Flux

Flux interviews Runic Games’ president and lead developer Travis Baldree about all things Torchlight 2. What makes the sequel so much bigger and better than TL1? Plus added commentary on the inevitable Diablo III comparisons, and even a bonus TL2 track from Matt Uelmen.

The fifty-first episode of The Diablo Podcast features Flux interviewing Travis Baldree, president of Runic Games and lead designer on Torchlight 2. The sequel to million-selling indy hit Torchlight 1 is a huge upgrade over the original game in every way, thanks to a bigger development team, more time, more budget, and just plain better ideas.

The interview runs about 30 minutes, and is bolstered by additional conversation between Flux and regular TDP guests Wolfpaq and The Eliminator, as they react to Travis Baldree’s TL2 comments and engage in some comparisons of the many feature differences between TL2 and D3. Refer also to Flux’s massive Torchlight 2 hands-on report.

As a special bonus, an exclusive 7-minute piece from Matt Uelmen’s TL2 soundtrack can be heard at the very end of the show.

Here’s what Matt told us about this piece:

“Steppes” is the third exterior action cue in the game and the central one for the first act, and I tried to capture the backgrounds’ mixture of green countryside with Himalayan touches. This act is centered around the Estherians, a pacifistic, mystical race utterly unprepared for an onslaught of demonic possession and pissed-off oversized teddy bears hoping to steal their picnic baskets and send them to hell. Think Marin County and the housing crash.
